So we recently moved to a new house on Boston's south shore, and our backyard borders on a good sized lake. Really nice views. Anyway, for the last few weeks, it has been pretty cold here, and the lake has started to freeze over. Note the word started. There is still a big hole, probably 100 feet across, in the middle of the lake, and obvious spots where there is water above the ice.
Last weekend, we woke up, looked out the window, and saw a couple of guys walking around on the half frozen lake. We wondered what to do. Should we go tell them to leave? Should we call the cops? Ultimately, I called my friend and asked if he wanted to come over and make some popcorn and watch these fools fall into the cold water. After about an hour, they were gone - we didn't see them leave, but we didn't hear about it on the news either, so I guess Darwin lost.
Well, the hole in the ice is still there. This morning, my wife woke me up to "They built a shack." Sure enough, we looked out the window, and not only had the number of idiots multiplied, they had erected some sort of structure out on the ice. Not sure what it was, but they seemed pretty excited about it. Then one of them started wandering around with a power auger, drilling holes in the ice. Brilliant. The ice is already unstable - let's make it worse. No idea why they were doing this. They didn't seem to be fishing or doing anything else useful. Maybe they were laying traps for the hockey players who appeared later. Unfortunately, no one seems to have fallen through yet. Morons 2, Darwin 0. Maybe the zoo will loan us a polar bear...
